April 21, 2021 -- EarthCam, the leading provider of webcam technology and services, today announced the GigapixelCam X80. The new webcam is the highest resolution, outdoor panoramic webcam ever, providing unprecedented visibility with 80,000 megapixel panoramas. To showcase this imaging achievement, EarthCam is also premiering the most detailed image ever of New York City, at over 80 gigapixels, captured from the top of the Empire State Building.
The GigapixelCam X80 captures images with a resolution 700 percent higher than EarthCam’s previous maximum resolution. With its 360° ultra-precise, military-grade pan/tilt/zoom base and fast, responsive control over IP, 4G LTE, or now 5G networks, a single camera can cover more ground than dozens of fixed cameras to scan massive subjects, such as cityscapes, bridges and stadiums. Utilizing Sony’s 61 megapixel sensor as the core image capture device, the GigapixelCam X80 captures thousands of extreme close-up photos and stitches them together into one unified panoramic image over 80 gigapixels in size. When viewers digitally zoom in to examine the picture detail, the resolution is still exceptionally high, without the usual pixelation revealed in a standard digital photo. This enables highly detailed rapid archiving for analytic applications and extraordinary digital movements in the creation of epic cinematic time-lapse movies.
“Sony Electronics Inc. is pleased to work with EarthCam to realize this milestone achievement for the industry,” commented Yang Cheng, Vice President, Imaging Solutions, Sony Electronics Inc. “Our ultra-high resolution Alpha α7R IV mirrorless camera combines an unprecedented level of detail and resolution with high reliability, giving EarthCam the ability to capture incredible 80 gigapixel panoramas that have never been possible before.”
This 80 Gigapixel Panorama was captured from EarthCam’s GigapixelCam X80 mounted on top of the Empire State Building. It is the highest resolution image of its kind ever created. Zoom in to reveal the tremendous detail.
“The GigapixelCam X80 embodies our commitment to next generation webcam technology creating new artistic and commercial possibilities for entertainment, construction and security applications,” said Brian Cury, Founder and CEO at EarthCam. “Sony and its Alpha brand camera line are proving to be outstanding to collaborate with as we continue to push boundaries and transform the art of visual information.”
From live streaming video and quick snapshots, to 360° gigapixel panoramas, automatically tiled and multilayered from thousands of images, the GigapixelCam X80 creates new opportunities that would be impossible with lower resolution cameras.
EarthCam’s patented GigapixelCam technology has been field proven in the most demanding environments by photojournalists and filmmakers, and the X80 forges a radical new standard for archival documentation. Unlike dome webcams which have limited vertical viewing capability, the X80 captures full vertical views of the largest scale construction projects. Highly impactful, positive public outreach for every project milestone is effortless. EarthCam has been creating Gigapixel imagery for almost a decade for projects such as One World Trade Center and Hudson Yards in Manhattan, The Louvre in Abu Dhabi and SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles. Customers can leverage the powerful software suite, industry leading service and on-site support that EarthCam has provided for almost 25 years.
