December 19, 2018 -- Webcam lovers’ favorite tradition returns with the 2018 edition of EarthCam’s 25 Most Interesting Webcams. Including everything from breathtaking scenery and wild animals to scientific experiments and even a Guinness World Record holder, the 20th annual list spans 8 countries and features engaging live webcams that entertained millions of people around the world in 2018.
EarthCam has elevated the live webcam to an art form and grown it as a serious business tool, while celebrating exploration and the entertaining ways they connect people. With the 2018 winners, viewers can start the day with sunrise views in Lauderdale-By-The-Sea, skate around the rink at New York’s festive Bryant Park, hop over to the beautiful Italian countryside and finish with a sunset over the beaches of Brixham, UK. Dance to Irish folk music inside the famous Temple Bar Pub in the heart of Dublin and don’t miss last-call as the exotic nightlife winds down on the neon-lit streets of Koh Samui, Thailand. Sports fans will discover the immense effort it takes to build the largest and most expensive football stadium in the world with live streaming construction cameras of the NFL’s new L.A. Stadium.
EarthCam’s judging panel chose the Top 25 Webcams list based on image quality, uniqueness and overall achievements in webcam technology. This year’s panel includes Ryan Gray, Digital Marketing Strategist, Visit Florida; Sarah Scanlan, Senior Video Producer, USA Today; Abby Dunkin, Associate Producer, CBS Newspath, CBS News; Billy A. Wilson, President of the North Carolina Wildlife Federation; Ken Borton, 2017 Top 25 winner for his Snowman Cam; and Natasha Pollard, PEP Teacher for Arlington Public Schools, who incorporates webcams into the curriculum for her students.
Interactive cameras are a recurring theme with EarthCam’s 2018 list. Most of us strive to not endlessly annoy other people, but a camera inside the offices of a car leasing website actually encourages it! The click of a button triggers get-on-your-nerves songs to the delight of viewers and to the dismay of the office staff. Geek out over a plasma physics laboratory in Princeton, NJ and get behind the controls of a wide range of robots that allow you to play musical instruments and draw original works of art. This year, webcams proved once again to be a powerful media resource. When the Kilauea Volcano on the island of Hawai’i erupted in May 2018, a local webcam provided continuously streaming updates of the lava flow and extended awareness of the devastating destruction to the island.
“We’re always surprised by the entertaining, unique and sometimes totally bizarre cameras we discover each year when compiling our list of winners,” said Jeff DeLiberto, CamMaster for EarthCam.com. “Webcams are connecting people with beautiful locations and interesting sights in ways that we never imagined possible. We continue to be impressed with the new applications for webcam technology and how those virtual experiences are being shared with a worldwide audience.”
Animal lovers will enjoy this year’s line-up of all things fuzzy, furry and cute. Peek into the active habitat of a meerkat mob at Zoo Miami in Florida and visit the adorable Kitten Academy in Fox Lake, IL. Howl at the moon with a unique collection of live webcams at the Wolf Conservation Center in South Salem, NY. Travel to the shores of Point Piedras Blancas in California, home to a massive elephant seal colony. By visiting EarthCam’s Top 25, there’s even an opportunity to learn the latest grooming techniques at Barbara’s Pet Grooming salon in Lake Hamilton, AR, where man’s best friend is lining up to be pampered.
