December 10, 2017 -- EarthCam’s favorite annual tradition is back with the announcement of the 25 Most Interesting Webcams of 2017! Spanning 9 countries, the 19th annual list features entertaining live webcams that have been enjoyed by millions of visitors around the world, and some outrageous newcomers that were just discovered this year.
The Top 25 Webcams take you on an adventure to Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s tallest mountain, the world’s busiest intersection in Japan and the largest cathedral in Italy. For scenic views that will have you coming back for more, travel to peaceful Snake River in Wyoming, relax with sunset views over Lake Michigan and explore a beautiful ski resort in France with eye-popping 360° panoramas. Sports fans will marvel watching the incredible effort it’s taking to build the Chase Center, future home of NBA’s reigning champions, the Golden State Warriors. Need a snack break after all this traveling? Feast your eyes on Donair meat slowly cooking on its vertical rotisserie for hours on end, live from Nova Scotia. Other innovative applications that won this year’s prize include a landscape painter in his European art studio, a bustling hardware store in Maine and the Seoul Tower, one of the tallest viewing points on the Korean peninsula.
Head to Gas Monkey Garage in Dallas, made famous by multiple hit TV shows, and watch live as Richard Rawlings and the team test drive their newest hot rod creation, or just burn rubber in their parking lot. This year proved again that webcams can be a powerful media resource, when Lauderdale-By-The-Sea webcam was streamed live on all major TV networks in the United States as a public service, extending awareness of the hurricanes that devastated Florida’s East Coast. Other 2017 winning webcams invite viewers to visit restored landmark sites, including the 17th century Kolobrzeg Lighthouse in Poland, rebuilt after World War II, and St. Nicholas National Shrine at the World Trade Center in New York City, rebuilt after the September 11 attacks.
“Webcams have become the perfect medium to connect people around the world with locations and landmarks that they have always wanted to visit, and sometimes serve as one of the only ways to safely witness extreme weather events,” said Brian Cury, CEO and Founder of EarthCam. “Each year, we are impressed with the incredible webcam content that live camera producers share with the world, and this year is no exception.”
Animal lovers will enjoy a land, air and sea tour of animal cams featuring a king cobra in Pennsylvania, hundreds of hummingbirds in California and piranhas in Georgia. A special shout-out to the Snowman Cam in Michigan, which received a live streaming upgrade for its 10th anniversary with the EarthCam Network and has remained a fan favorite, thanks to the sightings of bears, deer and wild turkey that appear nightly in front of the camera.
EarthCam’s judging panel chose the Top 25 Webcams list based on image quality, uniqueness and overall achievements in webcam technology. This year’s panel includes Selymar Colón, Managing Editor and Senior Director, News Digital, Univision; Karen Cummings, of the Cochrane Polar Bear Habitat and a 2016 Top 25 winner; Joseph “Joey Cigars” Tuzzino, Owner of Mulberry Street Cigars; Chi Ling Moy, Communications Manager, World Trade Center Construction, Port Authority of New York & New Jersey; and a third grade class from Spring City Elementary School in Tennessee, who is representing the ‘Kid’s Vote’ this year.
